Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most health insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment—without any cost-sharing (meaning no copays, coinsurance, or deductibles), as part of preventive health services for women.
What Does This Means for You?
Lactation Support Covered: The ACA requires that insurance plans cover comprehensive lactation support and counseling from trained providers—including International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs)—during pregnancy and after birth.
Breast Pumps Covered: Plans must also provide coverage for the cost of a breast pump (manual or electric, depending on the policy). Contact your insurance company for specific details.
No Referral or Prior Authorization Needed (in many cases): The ACA intends for breastfeeding support to be accessible. Many insurance plans do not require a referral from your doctor or prior authorization to see an IBCLC—but check with your individual plan to confirm.

If I am not currently in-network with your insurance company, or if you choose to self-pay, I’m happy to provide high-quality lactation support tailored to your needs.
Here’s what you can expect:
Superbill Provided – After your visit, I will provide a detailed superbill (a receipt with medical coding) that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Reimbursement May Vary – Some insurance plans reimburse part or all of your out-of-network lactation care, while others may not. Reimbursement is not guaranteed.
Check with Your Insurance – I recommend calling your insurance company before your visit to ask:
Do you cover out-of-network lactation consultant services?
What documentation do you require for reimbursement?
Is pre-authorization or a referral needed?
Support Every Step of the Way – I’m happy to help guide you through this process and provide the paperwork you need to advocate for your benefits.
